The city of Wels’ kindergarten in passive building standard was officially opened in October 2010. With two storeys and a total of nearly 1,800 m2, the building offers space for 6 groups (138 kindergarten children) and a playschool for up to 12 kids of under 3 years.
The light weight constructed kindergarten has an energy performance indicator of 8 kWh/m2a. The timber frames of the exterior walls are insulated with 40 cm of mineral wool, the roof with 48 cm of rigid foam boards. The ground floor is insulated from underneath with 60 cm of foam glass gravel. The building has underfloor heating supplied by district heating. The ventilation system is equipped with rotary heat exchangers. The fresh air is brought into the classrooms while the extracted air is taken from the wash rooms. The windows have exterior blinds and in summer the ventilation system and smoke and heat exhaust ventilation flaps bring in cool air during the night. The kindergarten also has a 5 kWp PV system installed on the roof. The total investment costs of the building amount to 3.3 million Euros.
