Launch of the Anaerobic Digestion initiative in the Rhône-Alpes Region

The development of anaerobic digestion is part of the objectives of the energy transition bill for green growth in the Rhône-Alpes Region. The development of anaerobic digestion process ties in perfectly with the objectives to install in France 1,500 digesters within 3 years.
In the Rhône-Alpes region, the Schéma Régional Climat Air Energie – Regional energy, air and climate plan – adopted in April 2014, sets an objective of 700 GWh/year of primary energy production derived from biogas for 2020 and is strongly supported by institutional authorities.

RAEE AD project

At present, 45 anaerobic digestion plants are operating in the Rhône-Alpes region, representing, in total:

  • 19 MWe of installed cogeneration
  • 360 GWh of biogas production
  • 80 GWh of electricity production
  • 130 GWh of thermal generation

The biogas produced comes from 5 sectors: agriculture, industry, wastewater treatment plants, non-hazardous waste storage plants, household refuse.
In the short term, many projects are going to emerge and, within 18 months, 32 new anaerobic digestion plants will be in operation.
Communication with the public and new effective financial engineering tools have been a key factor for success in the anaerobic digestion project.
