Energy Trophy

Energy Trophy 2007-2008

A high visibility competition, the “European Energy Trophy” is organised by a consortium of private and public organisations which play an active role in the field of enhancement of environmental performance across Europe. As part of its second round and given its previous success, the contest will be extended to 18 countries, with a wide array of participants expected to take part (estimated at 350-450, or 10 times higher than the 1st round).

  • The original Energy Trophy took place in 2004/2005 and involved both, private companies and public administrations in six countries. The second round of Energy Trophy will take place from July 1, 2007 to June 2008 and will involve an additional 12 countries.

  • The main objective of the competition is to reward and give recognition to outstanding energy saving in office buildings through implementation of simple, cost-free or low cost measures, i.e. behavioural changes such as switching off lights, turning down the heat etc.

  • The winner of the prize will be the entity that saved the most energy based on preset benchmarks, and will be awarded at a high profile Gala held in Brussels. Measuring devices will be provided and offered to all participants.

Objective: Capitalise on and surpass the success of Round 1!

The first round of the Energy Trophy project generated exceptional overall results. Based on past performance, new objectives were put in place for the second round:

  • Energy Savings of 37,000 MWh, equivalent to the annual consumption of 3,700 four-person households

  • CO2 reductions of approximately 19 tons across all participating countries

  • Cost Savings of approximately 2.5 million € overall

Given the above results, the organisers of this event wish to expand the visibility of this competition, this way emphasizing on the importance of energy efficiency and reaching professional-level status. The competition seeks to achieve similar (or better) energy and cost savings than during the first round, this way raising the performance bar across the participating countries. Additionally, the idea is to establish the organisational and financial basis for holding the Energy Trophy competition every year – without the use of public funds – and with an increasing number of participants throughout Europe.

Why participate in the Energy Trophy?

  • First and foremost, you will play an active role in generating significant energy and cost savings, as well as a reduction in CO2 emissions.

  • Energy spending of your company or administration will decrease significantly leading to more efficient use of your current annual budget.

  • You will be seen as an innovator and a leader in your market in the energy field.

  • Last but not least, you will be actively involved in an event which will take quite large proportions on the European energy scene. Therefore, through publicity and media coverage of the event you will acquire significant visibility in the energy field at the European Institution level.

The new administrative structure (adapted and corrected based on evaluation of the pilot round 1) will be available in the 18 respective languages. Please visit www.energytrophy.org to locate your support office.

  • Phase 2: During this phase the recruited participants will implement energy saving measures in their offices with continuous support of the national coordinator in each country. Software to help with measurements will be made available to all participants.

  • Phase 3: Twelve months later the winners of the Energy Trophy competition will be identified and awarded a prize at the Gala in Brussels. This event will be accompanied by numerous information dissemination activities and extensive media coverage.

The Energy Trophy competition will be institutionalised permanently by establishing the organisational structure and the financial basis for its annual continuation in all 18 countries, and for future extension to additional countries.
