FEDARENE Info 48 – Focus on Smart and Sustainable Islands

Our 2020 Spring Edition of the FEDARENE Info is out! This season, we focus on Smart and Sustainable Islands, and how to turn them into lighthouses of Europe’s climate-neutral future.

We are very pleased to present you the 48th FEDARENE Info focusing on Smart and Sustainable Islands. Due to their insularity, islands face many difficulties related to their energy needs: high transportation costs, water scarcity, limited economic diversification and local expertise, etc. On the other hand, they also carry significant renewables potential, unique ecosystems, and are often living laboratories for the development of sustainable and innovative solutions. So let’s see how we can unlock islands’ potential and turn them into lighthouses of Europe’s decarbonisation.

In this edition, you will find:

  • An edito by FEDARENE’s Vice-President for Smart and Sustainable Islands Kostas Komninos (AEGEA, GR);
  • A statement by Ditte Juul Jørgensen, Energy Director-General at the European Commission on “EU Islands as Trailblazers for the Green Transition”;
  • The story of how Samsø (DK) became Denmark’s 100% renewable energy island through an innovative approach to energy;
  • The story of how the Regional Government of the Canary Islands, the insular corporation and the Canary Islands Institute of Technology plan to decarbonize the island of La Gomera (ES) through a combination of intelligent self-consumption, innovative hybrid systems and microgrids;
  • Information about the EU City Facility and its upcoming Call for application.
